Forgiveness in Romans Bible Study Questions

Week 5 – God’s Plan of Forgiving Sinners

Romans 8 –   29-30 – Why is Paul bringing predestination up?

Eternity Past – Present – Eternity Future

Romans 9     (one of the more difficult chapters in the Bible)
               9:1-13
According to Paul what is or is not responsible for Israel’s rejection of Jesus?                                    Pay careful attention to what Paul does NOT say…

“Jacob I loved, Esau I hated”
Don’t miss the context! Malachi 1:2,3 and Deuteronomy 2:2-6; 23:7

              9:14-18
Is it fair for God to condemn people in some far off continent who haven’t                             heard the gospel or who haven’t had the same advantages he has given us?

“Saved by grace” rolls off our tongues easily – the application of it is more                            difficult for us. See verse 16.

      9:19-24
God’s Antecedent Will (God’s basic will)
Ezekiel 33:11 and 1 Timothy 2:3,4

God’s Consequent Will (consequence of our choice)
Mark 16:16

So, If God is going around hardening people like Pharaoh then why does                                God still blame us? Who can resist God’s will?

In Pharaoh’s case see Exodus 8:15,32 and then Exodus 9:12,10:1, 20, 27

“prepared for destruction” – katartidzo

“prepared before hand for glory – pro-hetoimadzo

For a parallel to this argument see again Romans 1:21-23 and
Romans 1:24,26,28

Verse 32 as the summary of the argument of Romans 9

  Romans 10 –
1-4 “Christ is the end of the law for righteousness” What does this mean?
See Matthew 5:17

Some of our problems/faults are so delicate that only our best friends can                               speak to us

“Faithful are the wounds of a friend;  profuse are the kisses of an enemy.”
–  Proverbs 27:6

5-17   How is a person saved?

Verses 9-10…explained in verse 13

But for those tempted to turn that confession into a work…
Verses 14-17

         Romans 11 –
Verse 1         Has God given up on the Jews?

What implications does that have for how we dole out forgiveness?
See Matthew 18:21-35

Verses 2-4    What is the modern parallel to these verses?

How do you explain the apparent phenomenon that people are falling                                    away from faith in Christ in large numbers?

Verses 7-11
How is God using jealousy to advance the Gospel?
See Acts 13:44-46

“Imagine a child pouting over being chastised for some misdeed. Wanting to draw the child back, his parents invite him and his siblings to play a favorite game. The goal is that seeing the joy on siblings faces will incite a jealousy that will cause them to reconsider their self-induced exile.”

   Verses 17-24
Salvation is NOT a cause for pride

Verse 29       If the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable then how can                                                         salvation be lost? See also John 10:28-30

Verses 33-36           This is a great summary of Chapters 9-11
